Q. What is the Transit Planning Board?
- The Transit Planning Board (TPB) is a joint venture between the Metropolitan
Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC)
and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA). It is established
through joint resolution of the governing boards of the three agencies.
The TPB was created as a result of the lack of a clear institutional and financing
structure to expand transit in the Atlanta region. Its primary mission is
the creation of a regional transit plan and subsequently a new regional source
of funds to implement and operate the system. Short term the TPB will also
function as a forum for coordination of transit services. The TPB was created

Q. Who comprises the Transit Planning Board?
- The TPB is made up of representatives from the three member agencies as well as
local governments, gubernatorial appointees and the Georgia Department of
Transportation. Board members include the Mayor of the City of Atlanta, the
DeKalb County CEO, the County Commission Chairs of Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb,
Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale Counties, the Board Chairs
of GDOT, GRTA and MARTA, the General Manager of MARTA, and three Gubernatorial
Appointees.
Q. How are the activities of the Transit Planning Board funded?
- The TPB is funded through contributions of local funds and formula federal transit
dollars as well as in kind services and staff from the three agencies.
Q. Does the Transit Planning Board have an office?
- The TPB office is located adjacent to the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority.
Offices are at 245 Peachtree Center Avenue, NE in Suite 800 of the Marquis
One building in Peachtree Center. The offices are convenient to the Peachtree
Center MARTA rail station (N1) as well as most local and express bus routes that
serve downtown Atlanta.
Q. Does the Transit Planning Board have staff?
- There are three direct employees of the TPB. The Staff Director, Cheryl King, reports
directly to the TPB. Lisa Lee is the Executive Assistant who keeps the office
running smoothly and John Crocker provides technical staff support. Other
support staff are allocated from the three agencies and loaned to the TPB effort.
Q. How is the Transit Planning Board Organized?
- The TPB has two board level committees. There is a Planning and Funding
Committee and an Operations and Oversight Committee. Additionally there is a
staff level Technical Committee which has several subcommittees including the
Regional Transit Operators Council, Marketing Coordination and a Performance
Measures Committee.
Q. When does the Transit Planning Board meet?
- The Transit Planning Board and its Board Committees meet on a bi-monthly schedule.
Generally, the Board or Board Committees meet the fourth Thursday of every month,
except in exceptional circumstances. The Regional Transit Operators Council
meets every first Wednesday at 1:30 PM with the Marketing Coordination and
Performance Measures Committees meeting on a quarterly basis.
Q. How do I contact the Transit Planning Board and make my concerns known?

The TPB is always interested in public feedback. The first ten minutes of a TPB board meeting are set aside for public comment and written comments are always welcome.
